Club Bangers: Where Are We Headed?

Editor’s note: Swagger’s no professional musician. He wishes so badly that he was, because apparently he thinks that musicians get all the chicks. Sure, he can play Für Elise on the guitar, but that’s about as far as it goes. William Hung sings better than him and all the heavy storms in recent years were caused by Swagger himself. Claims for damage can be forwarded to him via e-mail.

Pop quiz, boys and girls! You’re out on a Friday night, which song are you most likely going to hear more?

  • I Know You Want Me, by Pitbull
  • Pon De Floor, by Major Lazer

Pitbull or Major Lazer?

Choose the lesser evil.

Answer? It’s probably going to be even. But here’s the catch: You don’t know how Pon De Floor sounds like unless I let you listen to it, but oh, you DO know it. You know that song so well like the back of your hand.

I’m a huge fan of anything that’s not mainstream. Hearing a familiar tune when I’m out on a Friday night would send me on a huge rush. Just recently I’ve heard a local DJ play a remix of Kids by MGMT in a club. And I know for a fact that most, if not all, Kuchingites do not know about MGMT. Yet. I also heard another tune on New Years’ Eve, but I can’t seem to recall what it was.

“So what the hell are you trying to say?” I hear you ask. If you’ve been paying any attention, what I’m saying is that, our taste in music is evolving..and to be honest, Kuching, I love you so much for that. I see a future with no Ah Beng “tetno” music, but tasteful electro. I also see a future where fresh and soulful tunes replace “dangdut”, because seriously you guys, we are so over that stage.

Seriously, guys.

Nobody listens to this shit anymore. That’s almost a decade and a half ago.

We are reaching a stage where more people are starting to appreciate the different sub-genres which can qualify as club bangers. We’re not just restricting ourselves to pop, or hip-hop, or even electro house (gasp!) anymore. We’re starting to explore our inner fantasies. So DJs, play that “maximal electronic indie 8-bit dance club new rave punk” track and let’s see Kuching get wild!

That being said, here are some free MP3s (the hottest phrase on the net, am I right?) for you guys to kick things off. What’s a few more songs in your library anyway? Turn your stereos up, boys and girls! Like it? Then right click and save file, as usual.

Track #1: Warp 1.9 ft. Steve Aoki by The Bloody Beetroots

One word for this track. Sinister. I don’t think Kuching can handle this yet, but it was listed as one of the hugest tracks of 2009. Just goes to show, right? If you dig this, then you should also give the other variations of Warp (especially Warp 1977) a listen.

Track #2: Flashback (L.A. Boxers Remix) by Calvin Harris

Don’t worry, your speakers are A-OK. It’s just the way the song goes. Daft Punk-ish vocals, soothing bassline, just the way I like it. Would definitely work as the last song to end a set. DJs, take note. This is a 320. ;)

Track #3: Shhake It Up by Diplo + The Beatles

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

More of a “party at home” kind of song, instead of a club track, but still fun nonetheless. Brings you back to the good ‘ol days.

Track #4: Running by Chase and Status

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This is going to take us by storm, I tell you. Dubstep is the next big thing and it’s already hit KL. This is a personal favourite. The intro is spot on. Not only that, wait till the 0:57 mark, it’s worth it.

Track #5: Lean Back Wit It (Terror Squad//Will Smith) by The White Panda

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

What’s an MP3 giveaway without something you’re familiar with? Here’s a little something for you mainstream lovers. Also a personal favourite. Will Smith really had something going on back then huh? Groovy tune, a must have.

Well, that’s that. How’s that for our first giveaway? Love it? Hate it? Drop your comments!
