Rock ‘Em Right, Baby
If there’s one thing everyone would do with a bit of encouragement, it would be dancing. Our beloved town has its fair share of dancers, ranging from belly dancers to shufflers, and even freestylers to dancers who..well, need a bit more practice (case in point, yours truly). These people never fail to wow us with their techniques and impressive moves, and we love them for that.
But lately, eyes are turned on a group with members rising in the numbers each day.
For about two years now, Soul Higher Crew has been spearheading the Kuching B-Boy scene along with their partners in crime, so to speak. With events like Boyination, which is entering its 8th edition, Kuching is seeing a constant growth in this scene..and these guys are no joke. For 21-year old Hafiy of Soul Higher Crew, it’s all about the love for the art. With the help and support that they get from each other, the Kuching B-Boys are starting to reap their efforts.
The B-Boys are getting attention from other B-Boys from around Sarawak, Sabah and even B-Boys as far as KL, which is nothing but a good sign. Their frequent gatherings and competitions help each other improve to a higher level, which I myself think is pretty apt since it reflects their crew’s name.
Talking to another dancer, Daus (organizer of the event, and a pretty good popper if I may add), his love for dancing started when he was only 10 years old. He left for a while, but his passion drove him to start again. Cody, another B-Boy was there to try his luck. B-Boy Cody joined the scene after being persuaded by his friends. That came as a good decision, when last year, he was announced as the winner of Boyination 7 organized by Soul Higher Crew.
To a total stranger, breaking might not be that big of a deal, but to these people, it is their life. Sure, there might be some dissing or burning during their sessions, but it’s all part of the deal – floor tactics, if you will. Their love for the art binds them together and their constant need to help each other improve is surely, very impressive..and just for the record, I have nothing but respect for them. Respect at its purest form.
Shiok! supports the local dancing scene. Be sure to head on over to Soul Higher Crew’s website for the latest updates in Kuching’s B-Boy Scene. For more photos from the event, explore the gallery below.

a great event, was a pity i couldn’t attend this one. anyway, make sure the credit(s) is/are given to the right people/person.
hello there. im just wondering here, sir/madam. i thought rock ‘em right was the brainchild of firdaus (bboy daus). some statement in your website should be corrected. as far as im concerned, rock ‘em right has been invented and mainly organised by daus with help and support from the dearest crew members and also friends around him.tq
We apologize for the miscredit. It was an honest mistake, but the article has been corrected after going through the interview again. Thank you Q and Bella for highlighting the mistake. No hard feelings from anybody involved, we hope.
im glad to hear that. very much welcome
